ARTIST STATEMENT

Functional pottery is my favorite form of art to make. Why? Because of its ability to be enjoyed by most people. The ritual of having a morning cup of coffee is very common and the thought of people using my works in this way excites me. Mindfulness is very popular in mental health and I am intrigued in the ways pottery can support this. For example, the way the glaze and carvings feel on the hands when holding a mug and the way the rim of it touches the lips. I attempt to engage all the senses when people use my pottery.

My most recent work is inspired by the colors I see in my day to day life. I live near the ocean surrounded by tropical plants, bright colors, etc. This visual space around me is reflected in the colors I use and the flow of the patterning.

Similar to many artists, my work is a reflection of my life. My older work was done in college where life felt more chaotic and busy. By carving intricate details I was processing all the intricate and complex thoughts that were going on in my mind. In addition to this I was also interested in the history of pottery and pattern making.
